You know there’s a poem I like to quote once in a while: Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring.. But it was not so on the first Christmas night, it wasn’t silent and it wasn’t calm. You can just imagine the people sitting and reading the scriptures thinking “where is God in all of this” then you had the zealots plotting the overthrow of the dominant culture of the day which was Rome, voices, voices, voices everywhere. It would be everything but silent.
Perhaps you can identify with the amount of noise and unrest there must have been? But in the midst of all this, Carter reminds us that we can choose to place our trust in God. There can be peace, there can be calm.
